Great book, got me hooked on pentesting

As a college student majoring in computer science, I have a strong interest in security and penetration testing. After looking around for a while for a good book to get me started, I settled on The Basics of Hacking and Pentesting, and I am very glad I did so. It was a great introduction to not only the tools involved in pentesting, but the concepts and techniques behind those tools, so you actually know how and why you are doing things.

The author takes you through setting up a great testing environment, and then proceeds to introduce every step of a successful penetration test, including all the tools and techniques. After reading this book, I have not only a solid foundation on and understanding of the tools and techniques of pentesting, I now know exactly what to research and learn further so that I can master those techniques.

Overall an excellent book for anyone looking to get into security and pentesting and one I would highly recommend.

As good as it gets for a 'how to' on basic hacking

The book is very readable compared to other technical books. The writer is clearly a teacher who understands how to keep a reader's attention while providing useful, real world information. As of now, this book seems very up-to-date. It as published recently and has what I have read in other resources are commonly used tools in the industry.

I read the whole book and took copious notes due to my upcoming certification tests and interest in hacking. I used the tools in at least the 1st half of the book. I will update this review once I use the tools listed in the 2nd half of the book. As the book recommended, I downloaded Oracle VMWare, Kali-Linux and Metaspoitable. Don't be intimidated by these tasks -> Oracle VMWare is a piece of cake to install, and booting up two machines with Kali (which is the attacking machine) and Metasploitable (the woefully unprotected target machine) are pretty simple, too. All of these products are free. Preparing this test bed is your key to understanding and enjoying much of the material in this book. It also allows you to 'own' a system pretty simply, so you can get a feel for the core tasks in hacking.

As an example of success using tools and instructions in this book, I used nmap, a scanner, from the Kali virtual machine against the Metasploitable virtual machine, determined a vulnerability and associated exploit, and built and executed it using Metasploit, an exploit development and delivery platform. I consider this my first hack, and although it was made a breeze to do for the sake of learning as quickly as possible, I am still proud!!! It might be awhile before I give a presentation at Defcon, though ;-)

I have been a database developer for twenty years, working in various industries such as human resources, benefits and government, so I am not new to programming, but I think someone without programming training or experience should do fine with this book. The certifications I will be taking are Certified Ethical Hacker and Offensive Security Certified Professional.

Great general overview - best for beginners

This is a very good introduction to a method of penetration testing. It's called "basics" for a reason. It's short compared to most introductory books on this topic, but it makes the information a bit more digestible. It gently walks you through, in broad strokes, the process of a "typical" pen test. It's written in a non-technical style, so it's easier to understand for the newcomer.

The book does not go in-depth with many of the topics. It wouldn't be feasible, and then it wouldn't be an intro book anymore. There are books dedicated to just protocols alone. So if you are hoping for more explanations or tutorials on understanding things like TCP/IP - this is not it.

What I like best about this is that it assumes you have virtually no knowledge of the security field, can operate a computer with some skill, and understand how to follow directions. The high-level view is really best for the true novice, and helps to take away some of the intimidation of the field.

The downside, as is any technical book based on technology/internet, is that the information can get outdated or become inaccurate in a hurry. With a page limit for this kind of book, the author has to selectively choose what sources and references will appear in relation to the topic. The core principles stay the same, regardless, so don't get too upset if a site that's listed as an example is no longer functioning or the commands in bash have changed.

And one tangential bit/words of encouragement: if you are interested in infosec/cyber security but have no "formal" training/education, don't be afraid. Try it out. Something like this takes time and practice to get good at. (But also don't become a tool jockey - a good pen tester is well-rounded and is constantly adapting.)

About the Author
Karen Bonsignore, MA, RT is an associate professor in the Department of Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging at New York City College of Technology and is currently the project director of the Career ePortfolio web design project. She is certified in advanced imaging modalities, including mammography, quality management, and magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography. She has given numerous presentations on various radiology topics, most extensively ammography and breast imaging.

 

Myke Kudlas, MEd, RT is the director of the Mayo Clinic Radiography Program in Jacksonville, Florida, and assistant professor of Radiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He has written and presented xtensively in the areas of radiography and education, and is an active member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences, and the Jacksonville Society of Radiologic Technologists. He is a former item writer for the Developmental Testing Program of the College of St. Catherine and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

 

Dana Maiellaro, MEd, RT is an instructor in the Radiologic Technology Program at Nassau Community College. She also has an advanced certification in mammography. She has been program director of the Robert J. Hochstim School of Radiography at South Nassau Communities Hospital in New York and an assistant professor in the Department of Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging at New York City College of Technology. Her area of expertise is radiographic positioning and procedures, which she obtained working as both a diagnostic radiographer and CT technologist at several Level 1 trauma centers.

 

Abraham Thengampallil, MD is the former associate director of Medical Curriculum for Kaplan Medical. He received his MD at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY Downstate Medical Center) and did residency training in Pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Thengampallil currently works as a medical director for a medical education/strategic communications agency in New York.

 

Stinsey S. Thengampallil, RT has worked as a radiologic technologist in New York for more than 7 years. Her areas of clinical interest include mammography, bone densitometry, and diagnostic radiography. She received her Associate degree in Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging from New York City College of Technology. She is a New York state–licensed radiologic technologist certified in diagnostic radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). She is an active member of numerous professional organizations.

About the Author
Mary Douglas is one of England's most distinguished anthropologists. She is author of, among many other works, Purity and Danger (1966), Natural Symbols (1970), and Implicit Meanings (1976).
Baron Isherwood is an English economist and specialist on consumer behaviour currently with the Department of Health and Social Security in England.

Accounting for tastes

In this book, a renowned structural anthropologist collaborates with an economist to propose an explanation for one of the great mysteries of economics: where do "preferences" come from? Much of neoclassical economics rests on the assumption that, once we know the basic desires and tastes for a given population, we can then understand how people make rational decisions about how to acquire them and how to allocate their resources. The actual preferences themselves, however, are a black box. Douglas & Isherwood tackle this problem, evaluating several theories of "rational" economic actors from cross-cultural and systems theoretical perspectives. Their answer is that many of these mysteries are not so mysterious after all: we have good reasons for valuing the things we value, and many of the apparently frivolous fads and fashions are in fact life-and-death matters. "Good taste" is an index of social connections, of reproductive fitness, of one's ability to mobilize resources -- and in a society increasingly dependent on information and services rather than physical products, the race to remain on the cutting edge becomes like traveling with the Red Queen, faster and faster just to stay in place. Along the way, Douglas throws out a number of gems which are incidental to her argument, including a proposal for why women's work is always and everywhere valued less than men's. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in what anthropologists can tell us about the deep logics of behavior in the consumer society.

An excellent discussion of consumption and culture.

Written in 1979 and revised recently in 1996, Douglas and Isherwood's classic breaks through our own love/hate relationship with consumption and the biased interpretations of history and the present to look in a reasoned fashion at the patterns with which all people choose to buy things and the affiliations we create using these things. Lamenting the fact that economics has restricted itself by limiting human tastes to a black-box phenomenon, Douglas (a renowned, now retired, anthropologist) rips open the box and finds many convincing arguments for the uses of goods as a means of communication in all societies.
Additionally, they discuss previous and current ideas about why people save, or don't consume, and provide excellent comparative analyses between societies in Great Britain, blacks and whites in the US, the Nuer of the Sudan, and Zimbabwe's Lele people. What the reader comes away with is a deeper understanding of how people use consumption, both consciously and unconsciously, to provide information about themselves, send messages to others, and try to control the flow of culture and information to best benefit themselves and their interests.
The writing, which I have the impression was mostly written by Douglas since I'm familiar with her style from other books, feels a bit cerebral but is extremely lucid and will keep you on your toes with novel interpretations of familiar cultural phenomena.

A Classic

This is one of the early anthropological critiques of neo-classical economics. Many of the ideas expounded here are now being seriously pondered by economists who are attempting to find ways around them. Douglas,who is arguably the best known British anthropologist of her generation, has a particular insight into the way economist think - possibly because her husband is an economist. This makes her uniquely qualifed to provide us with an anthropology of consumption, that does not dismiss economists, as much as show how much they miss by not understanding the cultural dimensions of consumption.

It's about time we had a Dixieland Real Book. Robert Rawlins and the Hal Leonard Corporation are on to something GREAT.
The first readily available commercial collection of traditional Jazz that can be found on Amazon. (IMO)

Music collections like this are normally rare and hard to find. Traditional Jazz societies, underground Jazz Band Books, or just transcribing what you heard was the easiest way to learn songs. And sometimes what you found was illegible, illegal, flawed and incomplete.

Along comes "THE REAL DIXIELAND BOOK."
Finally! A legal, commercial source for early Jazz Music. But how does it stack up? Let's take a look:

-Presented in the same binding and material as the other Hal Leonard Real Books.
-Easily readable, organized, clean and uncluttered.
-Page numbers, index, tempo suggestions, composer names, and rehearsal letters are all here.
-Most of the lyrics and verses to the songs are included and the keys are true to how they are commonly performed.
-It's only $20!!!! (at least for right now).

A great selection of Traditional Jazz songs (see list at bottom). I was happy to see songs as complex as "Shreveport Stomp" and "The Pearls" included. This book covers a wide range of dixieland styles (Chicago, S.F West Coast, East Coast, etc. 'Fats' Waller, W.C. Handy, J. Oliver, Armstrong.) and difficulty levels.

CONS:
-Right now there is only a "C instruments" book, so Eb, Bb, and bass clef reliant musicians will have to wait.
-Every now and then I find some chord mistakes, usually at the end of a song (something to clean up in future editions).

Verdict:
If you play this kind of music (OKOM), GRAB IT. RIGHT NOW.
Despite the occasional chord error, this book is a treasure, and for the price of only $20, I consider it a real steal.

I hope there are more volumes in the Real Dixieland Book's future.

Who proofread this thing?

I own a whole stack of Hal Leonard Fake Books, and though I find the print small on some of them, I generally give them good grades for accuracy. This book, in contrast, is loaded with mistakes: wrong notes, missing notes, wrong rhythms, bad chords, missing chords, misspelled words, misaligned words, missing words, and a long list of miscellaneous glitches, e.g., missing repeat brackets.

I won't second-guess in an attempt to determine how this happened, I'll just say that all appearances suggest that this book went to press without passing through the proof-reading process. What a major disappointment.

Amazing and accurate book that we've been waiting for for years (from a professional dixieland musician)

I am a working professional bassist in New Orleans, Louisiana. I play many styles of music, but primarily traditional jazz. I play many variations of traditional jazz from the earliest New Orleans music through Chicago, New York, Kansas City, Revival-styles, and even European gypsy-swing. The Real Dixieland book is an outstanding resource for any musician who is getting to know this repertoire. Many musicians in New Orleans have begun using it on gigs and in rehearsals to get everyone to agree on often-disputed chord changes, lyrics, and melodies. Unlike other incarnations of real books, this one has songs that people-- working musicians, ACTUALLY PLAY. It's not just a dusty old dinosaur scroll of tunes that nobody has ever heard of. These are the traditional jazz tunes that cats are actually playing every single night of the week. Come to New Orleans, step into Preservation Hall, the Palm Court, or the Maison Bourbon and you will hear THESE songs. Take a ride on the steamboat Nachez or the Creole Queen and you will here my friends and I playing THESE songs with THESE chord changes.

You might ask how such a book was assembled, when so many other books on Dixieland music are so inaccurate. The author Robert Rawlins, is a REAL LIFE traditional jazz clarinetist! He ACTUALLY moved his family to New Orleans and PLAYED this music with the guys who ACTUALLY play it as an aural tradition handed down from King Oliver through Danny Barker. I know all this because I played with Mr. Rawlins and he's a killer clarinetist, steeped in the tradition.
This book wasn't researched from somebody out in Los Angeles compiling other books together. This guy actually came to New Orleans, played with all the traditional jazz musicians in town, including guys from the Original Tuxedo Jazz band (The oldest jazz band in the WORLD) and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He interviewed people about the way they play these songs. He did research in the library of congress and the Dixon Archives, and probably the jazz archives up at Rutgers. He transcribed original vinyl records and wax cylinders to make sure this stuff was dead-accurate, because if there's anything trad players get hung up on-- it's authenticity!

All in all, this book has become the industry standard for working Dixieland players. It is a great resource and reference for amateurs and pros alike. In addition to the tunes, he includes the original tin-pan alley verses to many of the songs which will make you sound super-hip if you pull those out on a gig.

One final note about the accuracy: When this book was originally published, Hal Leonard somewhere along the line published one of the early drafts of the book. It is subsequently riddled with odd layout issues, typos, and early interpretations of the chords that aren't always the most accurate choice. MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE REVISED EDITION BECAUSE THESE ISSUES GET SORTED OUT!!!

Also, if you get the chance to read Robert Rawlins' other books, Jazzology or How to play from a Real book, they are excellent. It's like a graduate degree in jazz theory condensed into a few pages!

This memoir by America's first female Secretary of State is a deeply conventional book, full of long accounts of negotiations and reflections on the proper uses of American power. Albright is not out to settle scores (her criticisms of colleagues are mild at worst) and seems, on balance, pleased with the foreign-policy record of the Clinton Administration. This might have made a dull book, were it not for Albright's appealing character—personally ingenuous but professionally sophisticated, earnest but hard-nosed. Her eye for details—clothing, food, travel conditions—helps bring the diplomat's world to life, and her portraits of foreign leaders are lively and evocative. The candid memoirs of the first woman Secretary of State

"Madam Secretary" presents the memoirs of Madeleine Albright, the highest ranking woman in the history of U.S. government (despite what conclusions you might have reached about some of the First Ladies, Edith Galt Wilson in particular). During the eight years of the Clinton administration Albright served as U.N. ambassador and then, following the resignation of Warren Christopher, as Secretary of State. Half of "Madam Secretary" is devoted to that period of her life, while the rest tells the story of how a refugee from Czechoslovakia eventually became the first woman Secretary of State in American history and one of the most admired public figures of recent years (she was confirmed 99-0 by the Senate). The result is a book that is both candid and insightful. The memoirs of any Secretary of State are going to be of importance, but "Madam Secretary" is actually a good read.
Madeleine Korbel Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1937. Her father was an official in the Czech government-in-exile who fled to London, where she remembers enduring the blitz. Her father served in several diplomatic posts after World War II and when the Communists took over Czechoslovakia in 1948 he sent his family to the United States, where he ended up running the School of International Studies at the University of Denver (where one of his prize students was Condolezza Rice). On the personal side of the ledger Albright talks about her marriage to "Newsday" scion Joe Albright, which ended in divorce, raising her three daughters, and learning late in her life that her Jewish grandparents had died in Nazi concentration camps. Earning her doctorate from Columbia, Albright worked her way from being Edmund Muskie's senior legislative assistant to work for National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brezinski in the Carter Administration. When the Democrats returned to the White House in 1992, Albright moved into the upper stratosphere of American diplomacy where she proved herself to be a Wilsonian moralist whose hero was Dean Acheson.
In the most important parts of her memoir Albright provides commentary on all of the foreign policy crises with which she was involved, from Rwanda and Serbia to North Korea and Iraq, with NATO's humanitarian intervention in Kosovo being the episode that stands out most in my mind as the one she wants to present as being paradigmatic of what the Clinton administration was trying to accomplish in terms of foreign policy. Not coincidentally, it was also the specific policy on which she was the biggest advocate and primary architect. She does not make the explicit argument, but when you read of how her family came to the United States the policy seems a logical extension of her personal story. Clearly the goal was to avert a humanitarian catastrophe and not as sign of support for the Albanian guerrillas.
You will also find Albright's views on the national and world figures with whom she had to deal, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Vaclav Havel, Vladmimir Putin, Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, Yasser Arafat, Slobodan Milosevic, and even Kim Jong-Il. Of course, a recurring theme of Albright's book is how she had to prove herself in the male-dominated world of power politics, which lends a certain power to the scene where she describes waiting for the phone call from President Clinton where he told her he wanted her to be his Secretary of State. Albright consistently places the emphasis on presenting her side of the record rather than going out of her way to defend particular policies and actions. Her position on American foreign policy is clearly implicit in her accounts, but she does not go out of her way to be an advocate.
Obviously this volume will be a primary document for assessing the foreign policy of the Clinton administration. Albright comes across as being candid and self-efacing, while also provided insights into the goals of the Clinton foreign policy. Having long ago grown tired of the public statements of any and all government officials, it was refreshing to read what it was like to play this came from someone who was actively involved and has never been burdened by being an elected official. Ome of the biggest compliments I could pay to Albright would be that this memoir comes across as being written by a real person. She might have been a diplomat, but she was not a politician (an assessment that I think applies to her successor at the State Department as well). Of course she touches on issues, such as terrorism and relations with Iraq, that are of even more importance today. "Madame Secretary" includes a pair of 16-page color and black & white photo inserts and a chronology of Albright's personal and political life. This 562-page volume will be of interest to not only Albright's personal admirers, but anyone interested in the machinations of American foreign policy in the past decade (especially if they have read Michael Dobbs' "Madeline Albright: A 20th Century Odyssey," the obvious companion volume for a presumably more objective look at the same subject).

Paving The Way to Power - A Female's Journey

If you, like me, are curious about America's foreign policy, you will find this 512 page autobiography of the first female secretary of state, good insightful reading. It is written in an easy to read manner, very detailed and inforative, and you will wonder, as I did, how this woman managed to work so many long hours for the White House, flew all over the world to meet and eat with other diplomats, and still maintain her composure. What exactly motivated her? She clearly did have the background for this job, dearly loved the power and prestige, and like her or not, you will enjoy her memoirs. Yes you will!

Strangely, after completing this long memoir which could have been considerably shortened, I discovered her ideas of freedom and democracy are actually not unlike those of Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, her successors in the Bush administration. So I wonder why then, does she sound so partisan and take little digs at them on television interviews?

Madeleine Korbel was born in 1937 in Prague. She lived in England, went to school in Switzerland for a time, and arrived with her family in America in 1948. In 1949 the Korbel family moved to Colorado. While attending Wellesley College, she became an American citizen in 1957. In 1959, after graduating, she married Joseph Albright. They had three daughter, including identical twins. She suffered a very painful divorce from Joseph Albright in 1983.

During the marriage she earned a Ph.D from Columbia University. She worked for Senator Edmund Muskie, worked on the staff of the National Security Council among other things, and somehow managed to be wife, mother, hostess, and hone her diplomatic skills while working long hours.

From 1982-1992 Madeleine served on the faculty at Georgetown University School of Foreign Serive. She served as foreign policy advisor to democrats Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis. President Clinton designated her as representative to the UN. In 1996, he appointed Ambassador Albright to serve as secretary of state during his second term.

The second part of the book details those four years from her perspective. Madam Secretary had excellent people skills, had studied various cultures thoroughly, speaks several languages, had good work habits and loved discussing world affairs with her male counterparts and of course, her place in the Clinton cabinet.

As a woman, an independent voter, a reader of American history and politics, and one who enjoys learning about the "White House" from various viewpoints over time, I recommend this memoir because it is unique. Written by a woman who experienced many ups and downs but worked her way thru them and continues to express her viewpoints on foreign policy, offers insights concerning other countries and cultures, describes just what her job entailed - well, you can make your own judgements of her, but please read this book first of all! It's a very good read.

BRILLIANT BIOPIC FROM HIGHLY CHARGED POLITICAL ANNALS

So I find myself a bit disagreeable when it comes to extolling Madeleine Albright. So what. ...
I am still fascinated by the chequered career of "Madam Secretary", who came from a Czech refugee family that first fled Hitler and then the communists. After reaching America, her zigzagging life eventually landed her in the upper echelon of American diplomacy and policy-making. This path alone makes this memoir worth every little centimeter of every frayed penny you spend on it.
This is an outspoken work, and it provides a ringside view of a world in unprecedented turbulence. No, I do not think the authors were fawning a political celeb. It contains a colorful portrait of several other big tykes -- the Clintons, Colin Powell, Jesse Helms, Vaclav Havel, Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon, King Hussein, Vladimir Putin, Slobodan Milosevic, and North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Il. All this tirade, whether your polemical filter reconciles with it or not, makes for quite an interesting read.
As regards weaving an intimate and panoramic tapestry of Madeleine's character, well the writing is fluent, tight, and very interesting. I seldom devour politically charged reminiscences with such zeal. It is clearly self-billed as a "memoir, so I did not expect it to be a highly objective analysis of political stances, if there were such a beast to begin with.
In my book, this comes highly recommended. Will definitely not bore you if that is any consolation. Come to think of it, I guess it also makes for a great movie theme.
