Excellent book on dampers

This is the best book ever written about shock absorbers. Although much have been written about dumpers in the other books, nowhere the dumpers have been covered so well as in this book, from design, construction, production, testing and using, to the analysis of ride-handling compromise. It covers the damper both as the unit per se, and as a small yet vital part of the whole complex vehicle system.

Please note that the information in this book is mostly academical and abstract. It servers educational purposes excellent, but has little practical value for a beginning racer or automotive enthusiast. The chapter about damper testing covers mostly laboratory tests on special machines. The chapter about fluid mechanics analyzes different damper fluid properties, without reference to any specific particular fluid compound. The chapter about valve design lists various valve types, characteristics and various theoretical models of valves. The chapter about adjustable damper enumerates the purposes of adjustment, classifies the dampers by the ease of adjustment, and gives different adjustable valve types. Having great theoretical value, the book however gives no advice for those people who would like to modify a damper manually by installing different kinds of valves, using another liquid, etc.

Millikens in their wonderful volume "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" have devoted 40 pages to dampers, but almost all on vehicle behavior, rather than damper design itself. "The Shock Absorber Handbook" reveals the problem of passenger comfort better than the Millikens' work. However, both of the books have similar style, both have hundreds of formulas and illustrations. I highly recommend it to anybody interested in the theory of vehicle dynamics.

The Shock Absorber Handbook is a good work, providing hundreds of formulas for computing load-dampening responses. Somewhat overly detailed on advanced theories,with strong references to hi-performance applications. It is the book you picture as a classic textbook for a college-level shock-design course. Chapter 1 gives a good basis in the history of the hydraulic dampener, from the initial start of friction snubbers to today's performance units. A good book to add to any shock design engineer's library.

The Bible of dampers

At first view the book seems like a dissapointment. Numerous equations, most of them rather complex. You feel that this is basically an academic book and has nothing to do with real and practical knowledge. But as you go deeper into the book you will soon realize that the content is going to be very helpful in a practical point of view.

The book starts with pure vibration theory. Don't even think that this is sonething to ignore as it is so important to know the basic aspects of vibraton theory in order to go deep in damper knowledge. You will find many important and interesting things for the real world, like transmissibility of the suspension, damping coefficient, damping ratio, damping factor and more. Also at Section 2.8 series stiffness is being discussed which is an extremely interesting subject in a practical point of view.

Chapter 3 is maybe the most important chapter of the book describing in depth the theoryof vehicle vibrations, ride, handling and most importantly you will learn a lot about ride handling compromise.

Chapter 4 is about motion ratio, its effect in suspension behavior and also you will be so happy to be in a position to understand the basic differences in terms of geometry and behavior between double wishbones, mcpherson struts, rocker arm suspension, pushrod, pullrod and motorcycle forks and rear suspensions. Personally, i was excited to find out that in most cases there are not huge differences in behavior between a double wishbone and a strut suspension.

Chapter 5 is all about fluid dynamics but as the author also states, you must already have a level of knowledge on the topic in order to fully understand the stuff there.

Chapter 6 is about valve design, valve types, velve characteristics and valve models.

Chapter 7 will guide you through the damper behavior, it will talk about valve flow rates and the effect of these on damper behavior, damper parameters like damper symmetry and more.

Chapter 8 discusses about the adjustable dampers and the effects of the various adjustments in the damper behavior.

Chapter 9 will give you a guide on how to specify a damper

Chapter 10 is a very nice and practical chapter on damper testing.

If i have a single complaint about this book is that it would be 100% perfect in the case it contained some colour real pictures of various types of dampers, damper internal components, various types of valves, etc.

All in all, this is a book you cannot afford to lose if you are serious in dampers. I would like to see a more modern new edition though.

A Poetic, Powerful First Novel

If you were unfamiliar with Rigoberto Gonzalez, it wouldn't take many pages of reading his first novel, "Crossing Vines," to suspect that his prior book was one of poetry, not prose. Each sentence, every paragraph, all chapters possess the clarity and music of poetry even in recounting the often harsh and always difficult lives of a crew of grape pickers. In a series of vignettes focusing on different characters, Gonzalez allows us into the lives and painful pasts of these workers. Gonzalez avoids the melodramatic and cliche when it would be easy to fall into such traps. This is a poetic, powerful first novel.

Crossing Vines, by Rigoberto Gonzalez is a short book that gives the reader a look at the day in the life of migrant field workers who are picking grapes in South Central California. Gonzalez starts by introducing the characters in a timeline as they awake at different times to begin their day. The writing is very descriptive, allowing the reader to virtually see, feel, and smell what the author is describing. The story winds throughout the day visiting each character numerous times, which allows us to get a feel of the work day they encounter, as well as learning more about each character’s life. Gonzalez also allows us to see how the characters, many who have known and worked with each other for years in various fields, interact with each other. I found the book very interesting especially due to the outstanding use of descriptive imagery. I recommend this book to anyone interested in cultural awareness revolving around migrant workers that are relied upon to pick crops throughout the Southern United States.

About the Author
Martin Gurvich, director of the Museum of Sacred Art (Belgium, Italy) and the Gurvich Museum (Uruguay), is an avid art collector and connoisseur. Martin s passion for art seems natural given his lineage as the son of renowned artist José Gurvich (1927-1974), who left behind an impressive art repertoire. Martin has published the book Living Traditions in Indian Art and several catalogues documenting the work by the artists in MOSA collection. He is also a member of ISKCON, Hindu Forum (Europe) and URI, a global interfaith organization. < Sushma K. Bahl, MBE, is the author of 5000 Years of Indian Art and former head of Arts & Culture for the British Council India. She is also an independent arts adviser, writer and curator and organizes festivals and cultural projects internationally. Sushma was involved with the Triennale-India (guest director), Bharat Rang Mahotsav (project consultant), Asian Art Biennale-Bangladesh (jury member) and ASEAN-India artists residency & exhibition (curator). The art exhibition Ways of Seeing she curated won the IHC Art India Award. Dr. George Michell trained as an architect in Melbourne and studied Indian art and archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. For more than 30 years he has worked on many research projects in India, most notably documenting the ruins of Hampi, Vijayanagara. Among his most recent publications are Mughal Architecture and Gardens, Southern India: A Guide to Monuments, Sites and Museums and Temple Architecture and Art of the Early Chalukyas. Dr. Kenneth R. Valpey is Dean of Studies at Bhaktivedanta College (Belgium) and a researcher at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies (UK). He teaches theology and practices of iconology in South Asian religious traditions at the University of Florida and Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Valpey authored Attending Krishna s Image: Caitanya Vaishnava Murti-seva as Devotional Truth. He is involved with translating the abridged English version of the Bhagavata Purana for Columbia University Press. He is a member of ISKCON in the Sanyasi order. Jaya Jaitly is the founder of Dastkari Haat Samiti, a national association for crafts and she is credited with innovating the Dilli Haat market place in Delhi. She is the former national president of the Samata Party and continues to engage in socio-political issues. Jaya has also authored many books including Vishwakarma s Children, Craft Traditions of India, Crafts Atlas of India and Crafting Indian Scripts and written stories for children as well as vast documentation and artistic maps of the arts, crafts and textiles of India. Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik is a self-taught mythologist based in Mumbai. He worked in healthcare as a medical doctor for 15 years before turning to his full time passion in writing. He has authored 25 books and 400 articles on the relevance of mythology in modern times. He consults for Star TV and Epic TV and is advisor to the shows Devon ke Dev Mahadev and Mahabharata. He is speaker on TED and TV shows Shaastrath and Business Sutra and his views on leadership, management and governance have made him a popular speaker at corporate events and business schools.
