superb scholarly and technical treatment

I was given this book for a writing project and dutifully plowed through it over the Christmas holidays. Overall, I must say that it was an absolutely excellent holiday book as well as chock full of useful ideas for my scholarly purposes. This is an extremely difficult balance to strike and Israel has done it better than I thought possible - I was prepared for a long dry slog and instead found a great and exciting story.
Edison, Israel argues, was not just a lone little-educated tinkerer of genius as he is often portrayed, but the creator of the prototype for the modern corporate research lab - he knew how to find talent, how to organize it to get the most out of people, and how to beat the competition by both speed and in the creation of entire new systems of technology. He also knew how to manipulate the media and build on his fame, creating a myth to which he had to live up. That being said, he had a pitch-perfect intuitive sense not only of potential new markets, but of how to create technical solutions to exploit them. He learned from his failures and strove to apply his less-successful inventions elsewhere, often to great effect. Taken together, this was true business genius and Israel explains it all succinctly, including the exposure of Edison's many weaknesses in management and his financial affairs and his many flops (such as the mining experiments that nearly bankrupted him). Furthermore, the basics of his major inventions - improvements to the telegraph and telephone, the light bulb, commerical electricity generation systems, to mention a few - are covered with competence, always with an eye to the management of it all and what it took, all of which are of great use. This adds up to a masterpiece of scholarship and popular writing in my view, crossing a plethora of disciplines in very readable prose and at a good pace of storytelling.
However, there are many things that make this a challenging read and in some ways disappointing. Even though I know a lot about science and engineering from my own writing, I found the many passages explaining the nuts and bolts of his inventions hard to follow and ultimately rather dry. If the reader is not interested in these highly technical details, he can skim them without losing the narrative thread. Moreover, Edison as a person does not always come thru, though really he was his work and not much else. You also do not learn much about the fate of his enterprises or even his personal financial fortune after his death, which is also a part of his legacy that should be explored. Finally, Israel addresses somewhat rarified questions in the concluding chapter regarding whether Edison was a "scientist" and how industrial research was changing (developing specialties that required far more education than inventors of Edison's "heroic invention" epoch) to make the emergence of generalist, self-taught inventors like him far more difficult and with limited horizons; while I enjoyed this a great deal, it is of limited interest to those who were never steeped in "science policy."
All in all, highest recommendation. It is a great achievement and will stand as one of the definitive biographies of this great and difficult man.

The best biography of Edison so far

This is the first biography of Edison with real details about how he and his co-workers carried out the process of invention. The best previous Edison biography (Neil Baldwin's Edison: Inventing the Century (1995)) contains many interesting personal anecdotes but lacks the sort of research and development details required by a technically oriented reader. Paul Israel's scholarly work is a much needed addition to the history of technology.

Gird yourself for a long, slow march

Reading this book has been an experience for me. I wanted to find out more about the life of one of America's most famous inventors, and this book has helped me along the way, so I give it credit for that. However, I have felt like I am trudging into a mighty windstorm, reaching deep into my soul to plunge each forward step as I slowly turn the pages in this book. There are pockets of enlightenment throughout the book, but it really is a relaying of facts about Edison's life, which is technically what a biography should do, but this book does not come alive in my hands like others have.

To be fair, I did accomplish my goal of learning more about this great man. I learned that a lot his inventions were a result of not just great intellect, but of great work ethic and stick-to-it-iveness. Also, one of his greatest contributions was a corporate model for delegating work among his subordinates. The speed of the development of his inventions was the key, as several other inventors were working on similar ideas at the same time.

Anyway, I recommend the book as a good introduction to the life of Tom, but I am sure that there is a book out there that will give you the same enlightenment without making you feel as though you've crawled on your hands and knees through the Sahara, with a canteen full of lukewarm water that leaks at a very slow rate.

A book to be read by every one who loves a thriller and reads to learn some lessons

I have read every book by Priya Kumar. Until recently, her best was I AM ANOTHER YOU. Now, I am not sure. Have to read both that, and I WILL GO WITH YOU a second time to see if one surpasses the other, or each stands on its own as an amazing piece of writing.

I WILL go with YOU is an amazing, gripping, thriller type book with deep learning opportunities. The book starts with a young woman running to catch a flight, and almost missing it - the only reason she makes the flight is because airlines staff help her out. How I can relate to that! On Sunday, March 15th, I almost missed my flight from New Delhi to London - due to long lines at Security and VERY slow processing at the counters. Thanks to the compassion of other travelers who allowed me to break the line and move forward, I caught my flight and as I sat on the Virgin Atlantic flight and caught my breath, I started reading the book. Soon I wondered if it was the right book to read on the flight, and when couple of cabin crew asked me about the book I could not but warn them to read the book when they were at home, amidst a loving family with the reassurance of safety having their feet on Terra firma! But, I asked them to read the book, as it is a must read for every one who reads to learn a few lessons from every book. The unexpected twists and turns in the book are amazing and the transformation of key persons in the book is very revealing. Nuggets of wisdom drop out of the thoughts of every key character - whether the person is disturbed, enlightened, or just another person. Every other chapter has a lesson to learn, "Where there is a purpose, there must also be an urgency for its fulfillment" - what a lesson to learn! I have 5-6 critical purposes in my life, but have lacked the urgency, and so have got nowhere ! "Success means different things to different people. Those who have it, think they can buy the world with their power, people included. Those who don't have it, think they can scrape it off those who do. There are those who don't care about the result of what they do and are disconnected from success. And then there are a select few, who don't care about what they get, as long as they love what they do." I like to think I belong to this last select few :) "It's funny how it takes a crisis to shake us up to pay attention to what is really important. We take our life for granted and then we regret not doing that which we wanted to do (the) most." Buy the book, read it, share it with friends and family. This is the best $7 you can spend in 2015!

I was introduced to Priya Kumar by my good friend and when I started reading `I will go with you' it was very hard to put down the exciting and thrilling novel. Excellent perspective on life and death elaborated with great examples. Infusion of reality with spirituality at its best. I particularly liked the last chapter that Sarah (Priya) writes which has such deep and profound meaning to human relationships. I have shared this chapter with many of my young friends who are in or may be looking for a relationship. Priya talks about" Relationship code of conduct" to list a few of the relationship codes: "Do you agree to bring flowers every Friday? Do you agree to hug me when I am upset? Do you love my dog?" Priya also talks so eloquently about the difference between Love and attraction "what is Love, attraction is not love. If the attraction is purely physical then love is a camouflage for lust" you have to read the book to fully understand the essence of maturity and sensitivity that she has displayed.

Don't quit reading this book!

The perfect book to go from "wantrepreneur" to entrepreneur. The Art of Resignation gave me all the tools and tips I needed to feel confident in my decision to quit. About the Author

John Cromby is Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University, UK. Previously, he conducted research and teaching at the Universities of Nottingham and Bradford, and he has experience of working in mental health, drug addiction, and learning disability settings. His work engages with the ways that bodies and social processes come together to produce experience, including experiences of distress. In recent years this has meant exploring topics including paranoia, clinical sadness, emotion and fear of crime, and experimenting with methods of jointly analysing textual data and embodied activity. He is a former editor of the journal Subjectivity.

David Harper is Reader in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London (UEL), UK. He trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool and worked as a clinical psychologist in National Health Service mental health services in the north-west of the UK for nine years. For a number of years he combined work as a clinician with part-time study for a PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has been at UEL since 2000 and his research interests are in applying critical psychology and social constructionist ideas to the understanding both of distress (particularly paranoia and unusual experiences and beliefs) and the work of mental health professions. He co-authored Deconstructing psychopathology (1995) and co-edited Qualitative research methods in mental health and psychotherapy: An introduction for students and practitioners (2012). He undertakes a small amount of clinical work as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Newham as part of the Systemic Consultation Service.

Paula Reavey is Professor of Psychology at London South Bank University, UK, where she delivers a module on the psychology of mental health and distress. She edited the volume Visual Psychologies: Using and Interpreting Images in Qualitative Research (2011) and also co-edited two volumes, New Feminist Stories of Child Sexual Abuse: Sexual Scripts and Dangerous Dialogues (with Sam Warner, 2003) and Memory Matters: Contexts for Understanding Sexual Abuse Recollections (with Janice Haaken, 2009). She is currently working on a co-authored book Vital Memory: Ethics, Affect and Agency (with Steven D. Brown, 2013) and has also published numerous articles on social remembering, child sexual abuse and sexuality, mental distress, and embodiment and space, using a variety of methodologies, including memory work, discourse analysis and visual methods.

Best book on the philosophy of induction

Laura Snyder's book will become a classic. Her treatment of the important philosophical discourse between William Whewell and John Stuart Mill exposes the brilliance of Whewell's argument and the applicability of his method called Discoverers' Induction. This book is a must for all who are considering or conducting inductive research.

Not only is this book well written, the research is extensive and the subject matter is brilliantly brought to life. For anyone interested in the philosophy of science, induction, and the ideas in vogue during the Victorian era, this book is a must. Laura Snyder also shows the timelessness of the issue and the importance of philosophy in the advancement of science. Moreover, in an insightful footnote, she postulates that with a relatively minor philosophic correction, Whewell's ideas ring true - and have a power to transform the debate in philosophy of science that is not typically granted to him by today's intellectuals.

Essential reading for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008/R2 Administrators

Although Windows Server 2012 R2 has been out for several years now, many administrators are still working with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 (or even Windows XP and 2003 Server!). If you fall in to this category, this book is for you. The Windows Server 2012 R2 Administrator Cookbook by Jordan Krause is a great resource to use to begin learning about the new roles, features, and management interfaces in the latest Windows network operating system. The “cookbook” format is conducive to quick learning, as the book is conveniently arranged in clear and concise “recipes” for each administrative task. The book provides a high level overview of nearly all aspects of the operating system, including configuring and administration using the server manager and PowerShell for DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, security, networking, remote access, IIS, certificate services (PKI), and much more. If you’re new to the Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system, I’m sure you’ll find this title helpful.

Some computer books tell you WHAT tasks you need to perform, but leave you in the dark as to exactly HOW to perform them.

This book, on the other hand, give you clear, concise, step-by-step instructions for many of the common tasks performed by Windows Server administrators. (The chapter on certificates alone is worth the price of the book.)

If you administer a Windows network or just want to learn more about Server 2012 R2 then this book is for you. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Jeff Leatham is the artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris and floral designer for such clients as Alexander Wang, Philip Treacy, Hermès, and Givenchy. Coffee Table Book

It's a beautiful coffee table book. It got good reviews, so I bought it for my daughter who is just getting into flower designing. I thought she could use it for ideas and inspiration, but since the book is sealed you can't see what is inside. It is filled with beautiful pictures of wedding flowers of very wealthy people who can spend a million dollars on just flowers. Not too many flower designers will have the opportunity to design a multimillion dollar wedding. No information in there for the flower designer, just a pretty expensive picture book.
