Another very good textbook

Although this particular edition of the book (1997) is becoming a little dated, it is still a rather decent run-down of all the problems and challenges that are facing public policy issues today.
I think one of the main things that I got out of this book was that governments have had to become much more creative in formulating their policies than they were a decade ago. This is due in large part to the fiscal constraints that the large debt and deficits of the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s left on government manouverability. In the past, it would seem that all government woudl do when devising policy would be to throw money at the iniative to ensure its success. A lack of money in the current context has forced government to reappraise its role in society (hence the section stating that the current mantra in many civil services is that government should "steer not row"). Policy makers have to be much more creative and this is what has led to partnerships with corporations and other interest groups.
All in all the book is an okay read, however, it can begin to drag after a while. I think it was intended as a univeristy textbook for introductory courses on policy analysis.

She is a member of the Vermont Classical Language Association and is currently translating Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae. She lives in Charlotte, Vermont.

My husband and I are enjoying reading this book. Since Hildegard has been made a Doctor of the Catholic Church, we've been exploring her writings and music. Our complaint is that the translation of this book doesn't well reflect the deep faith of St. Hildegard: she believed in Jesus and much of what she wrote was the fruit of prayer and study. This book translates the parts speaking of her faith rather stumblingly. We look forward to a more informed translation of this and her other books.

Translation avoiding Christian themes

This book is very interesting as other reviewers noted. The biggest issue I have with it is the poor translation of Christian themes (natural to a work written by a nun of the 12th century). Where the word "demon" is used in the original text, the translator, Priscilla Throop, renders it as "airy spirit". And yes, there is a big difference between an "airy spirit" and a demon. Consider which one you would want in your bedroom at night. Yes, there is a difference. This makes me wonder what else Throop is twisting to fit her own worldview instead of simply giving us Hildegard's writings in common English.

About the Author
Father Paul O'Sullivan, O.P., was born on February 7, 1871. After studying in Dublin, he went on to Rome, where he was ordained a Dominican. He is the author of How to Be Happy, All About the Angels, The Wonders of the Mass, Read Me or Rue It, An Easy Way to Become a Saint, and The Secret of Confession.
Father O'Sullivan also founded the "Catholic Printing Press" and established the Rosary Association, one of several associations he created with the Church's permission. He wrote on and had a great devotion to St. Philomena as well. He died in 1958, on the Feast of the Presentation.

The Forgotten Masterpiece

In 1920's Brooklyn, Margie graduates from highschool and is filled with youthful optimism. Determined to rise above the drudgery and poverty of her upbringing, Margie finds a job at a small business nearby and attempts to escape her overbearing mother and her overworked,disillusioned father. Before long, she meets Frankie Malone, a poor Brooklynite like herself, and the two fall headlong into courtship and marriage. Despite differences between her and Frankie, and some difficulties in her relationship with her parents, Margie still hopes that "tomorrow will be better."
Perhaps more than many of her other books, "Tomorrow Will Be Better" showcases Betty Smith's boundless abilities. Although the synopsis of this book may sound unassuming and dull, with Smith's writing the story becomes rich and eye-opening. Never have I found another author who can take an ordinary life and an ordinary situation (such as Margie's) and fill it with such truth and wisdom so that it becomes powerful. Smith has a rare gift for truly putting herself "in her characters' shoes" and seamlessly weaving their differing stories together to form a believable novel. While "Tomorrow Will Be Better" is ultimately a sad story, its sadness is fitting, realistic, and handled extremely will. This story of optimism, dreams, and disillusionment may not be quite the show-stopping masterpiece that "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" is, yet it deserves to be read for its excellent characterization and deep truth.

wonderful in its own right

This book is often compared to Smith's opus "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" and thus many readers miss what is truly great about this book. Whereas "Brooklyn" chronicles Francie's growth within her family from child to woman while weaving in the perspective of her mother, father, aunts, etc., "Tomorrow" is purely about Margie.
"Tomorrow" begins with 16-year-old Margie getting her first job in Brooklyn. It chronicles her courtship and marriage to Frankie, a neighborhood boy with his own family issues i.e. overbearing mother, loud father, myriad sisters. Margie's own parents are none too attentive to their daughter and what she might need, but feel pangs of loss when she decides to get married.
Margie tries to please her mother, mother-in-law, and husband, make ends meet, gets pregnant, and gradually all of these adult conventions that she is supposed to want threaten to destroy her unless she stands up to all of them. Only then will she truly be an adult.
This is an excellent account of a girl becoming a woman and proving it is an internal, not external, journey. The tale is as true today as it was in the 1940s. Female readers will identify with many of the sentiments expressed in this book and find themselves comparing their own lives to it.

Another classic from Betty Smith

There is something about the way Betty Smith writes that just pulls me deep into her life. I say "her life" because we are getting slices of her life in each of her novels. {"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "Joy in the Morning" are the most directly autobiographical.} Even though her prose are direct and her stories are deceptively simple, I cannot put her books down. I am there with her characters, inside their lives as they are living them.

Like in "Angela's Ashes," the Irish/American impoverished desperation and the raw immediacy of young life are stark and vivid in "Tomorrow will be Better." Parents who never had a chance to develop emotional and physical resources themselves, are brutal toward their children. The children have not lost hope for a better life, but they see people who have given up all around them. As a prejudiced on-looker, I am driven to hope that they get the opportunity to be loved and loving and rise above their parents' frightening existence.

This is just as riveting as the rest of her books. I only wish that there were more!

Blood, Sweat and Tears

This is a great 'behind the scenes' look at one man's struggle to establish the nation's first public e-school. Sadly enough, many of the struggles the author faced stem from resistance posed by the educational establishment and its drive for self-preservation. While one might glibly assume a profit motive, the book reveals to us how the author's personal experiences drove him to beat the odds and make ECOT a reality. Rather than a money-making scheme, ECOT emerges as a labor of love.
One wonderful feature that maintained my interest was the student case history featured at the beginning of each chapter. These testimonials from successful ECOT graduates paint a wide and varied portrait of today's American students and the challenges they face. From school violence to teen pregnancy, lack of motivation, family illness and the demands of work, we get a firsthand account of the issues these students face and how the availability of publicly funded home e-schooling allowed them to cross the educational finish line.

ECOT.........

Being one of the students featured in the book, I was thrilled when I first found out about the book. Upon reading it, I finally realizd how moch sweat and back breaking work went into ECOT. It truely has revolutionized the way that anyone will go to school. I enjoyed the time that I spent there, and can't wait until the day that it appears around the world.
I thought from the get-go, the book was mainly about Mr. Lager's approach to starting a school of this caliber, and I was right. From an idea to reality, this book really details what really went into making ECOT anything but an idea on a drawing board. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the future of schooling as we know it for one reason. It's here, alive and well and ready to go.

Fantastic Read!!

I am currently a student enrolled in the ECOT High School and I when I discovered this book I was excited to read it. I quickly bought myself a copy and couldn't put it down!! I think that more ECOT students need to read this book--it will really open your eyes and show you just how much work went into starting this school. ECOT has been wonderful for me because of my medical situation and I think this book made me appreciate it even more. I would definitely recommend it to anyone!!! Please read this book--it is definitely worth it!!

I thought it was just fabulous!

I have just finished The Earl of Destiny, and I thought it was just fabulous! Yes it had everything I usually like. It is a steamy historical romance with a cast of colorful characters. But it ended up being much more than that! It was the perfect combination of suspense, mystery, trials, acceptance, and redemption. I got this as an ARC and I literally lost sleep reading it. I just didn’t want to put it down! The heroine, Brianna, is harboring a terrible secret, to protect her selfish and at times inconsiderate sister. At the same time all she wants is to stay in the background and not be noticed, but of course the hero, The Earl of Lahaunt, does notice her and decides she is the one for him! He systematically breaks down her barriers, after he basically tricks his way into her life. I almost never use the highlight feature on my kindle, but there was such a sweet, romantic line that the Earl Seb said to Brianna, that I actually saved it so I could read it again whenever the mood strikes! And the evil they both face toward the end almost gave me palpitations! There is so much more good stuff, but I don’t want to give anymore away. If you like this genre, you will love this book!

Never warmed to this story

I never ever warmed up to the heroine in Earl of Destiny and this is what really stole all the magic for me in this story. I found her beyond controlling to manipulative and at times enabling. She was someone who lashed out at others and she uses her past wounds (which are many) to justify all of her hurtful and at times unkind actions.

Brianna Silverton has one goal in mind and that is to completely control her sister’s choice for a husband. She is only a year or two older than her sister but acts as if she is ten years older or so. Bri has suffered major trauma and to say it has colored every area of her life is not an overstatement in the least. I read her sister’s book first which also colored my view of the very scheming Bri. Her sister, Lily comes off as a sorority sister who just cannot hold her liquor, she gets wasted and throws up in the carriage so much so that Bri accommodates her by riding in open air carriages so Lily can throw up easier after the routs they attend. Yeah, Bri can be enabling. Also, it was hard for me to envision a debutante searching for a husband to act so inappropriately.

Earl of Luhaunt,Sebastian Rallage, is a truly sensitive man. He spots Bri and decides she is the one for him. He just has this feeling about her. He pursues her at his friend’s house party and even though Bri has zero desire to marry. She states this emphatically to Seb but he is supremely confident that she will be his.

Bri has taken upon herself to be the protector of absolutely everyone that she cares for and this makes her at times admirable and arrogant. How she accomplishes this is through some deceit and some controlling maneuvers. She says her sister always forgives her and this she feels justifies her actions. She keeps key information from those around her, and she is highly resentful of anyone offering a differing opinion or even well-meaning help. Seb barely has a chance with her because she is so caustic. She tells him to leave and when he does she gets angry. She absolutely expects the worst from Seb who has for the most part been the soul of equanimity and patience. Bri has exacting standards. She comes across as a woman who is so caught up in her past that I could not believe that Seb’s love was enough to change her.

Ok story

I gave it 3 stars because Miss Jackson does tell a good story. This storyline just didn't do it for me. I am not a fan of the back and forth with main characters. They trust each other, then next chapter they don't. I didn't care much for Bree the heroine very much . She seemed to be a very annoying personality. Over all the whole story seemed to be missing something.
