Bjorn Lomborg is an adjunct professor at the Copenhagen Business School. “Global Warming” is called the greatest threat to our society. It is caused by increased carbon dioxide levels over the past centuries. What is the most effective way to solve this problem (‘Preface’)? This book was published in 2007 so you can test the predictions. They predicted the extinction of polar bears after 2012 but they are increasing overall (Chapter 1). This book had four points: global warming is real and man-made; statements about global warming are often wildly exaggerated; we need simpler, smarter, and more efficient solutions; there are more important issues. Industrializing countries like China and India produce 40% of carbon emissions.

Global warming warms land faster than water, and winter more than summer (Chapter 2). While heat waves kill people, so do cold spells. More die from cold, its just not publicized. [Who controls the Corporate Media?] The heat increases have no major effects. Cities are hotter because they lack trees and vegetation. Painting asphalt white would reduce heat buildup and lower air-conditioning costs. A “carbon tax” is a regressive tax that affects all people; it would be added to the cost of food, clothing, shelter, and medical costs. If “global warming” is reduced then more people would be able to live in the world and this would cause more “global warming”! The Kyoto Protocol is too expensive for the good it does (p.31). Rising sea levels? The sea level rose a foot since 1860 (p.60). Global warming may not cause more hurricanes (p.73). Banning housing from coastal areas is a better solution, so too better construction (p.79). Colder times caused worse flooding (p.82). Destroying wetlands is a problem.

Will there be another Ice Age? No (p.91). Malaria used to be more common in the US while the world warmed (p.95). Global warming should lead to longer growing seasons and higher yields (p.104). Carbon dioxide acts as a fertilizer for vegetation. Global Warming is happening (Chapter 4). Cutting carbon dioxide will not affect the problems (p.113). Agricultural research can boost food production (p.115). The Little Ice Age was blamed on witches (p.125). In the early 1970's they predicted another Ice Age. Global warming will cause more heat deaths, increase sea levels, more hurricanes and flooding, more malaria, starvation and poverty. Solutions have both benefits and costs. Does the idea of “global warming” make higher taxes popular? Does it promote fear and terror so emotion replaces reason? Who benefits from this police?

Chapter 5 presents the conclusions. Sea levels rose about a foot over the past 150 years. Who will cut their growth or consumption because of a long-term problem (p.151)? Traffic is a major cause of deaths, it could be eliminated by a 5 MPH speed limit. But its costs are too high (p.154). Fossil fuels provide benefits (p.155). Else it would be like in Medieval Times. Should we chose the environment over the economy? Lomborg has his priorities: mosquito nets against malaria, improved building codes for hurricane resistance (p.164). The book ends with ‘Acknowledgments’, ‘Notes’ by page number, ‘Literature’ and an ‘Index’.

A Good but Incomplete Analysis
By JLA
While it is refreshing to see a popularized economic approach to the issue of global warming, it would have been better for Lomborg to have told a more complete story.

Lomborg attempts to paint a more complete picture by including other social issues that, he argues, threaten the welfare of humanity more than global warming. This inclusivity should go both ways, but in this analysis it doesn't, and Lomborg's artificial focus on warming (its costs, particularly) leaves the reader shouting: But what about all the other benefits from keeping carbon in the ground and out of the air!?

If we cut warming at a cost of X, yes, we'll have less warming and so fewer heat waves, less severe flooding, less famine, etc. to a certain degree, but we'll also have fewer cultures raped to extract fossil fuels, fewer people displaced by coal mining, fewer rivers polluted by spilled oil, less cancer from people drinking ash-contaminated water.

Just focusing on global warming is fine if that is all one wants to do, but Lomborg specifically instructs us to focus on more than just warming (such as growing more food to end hunger, taking malaria-preventing measures in the developing world, and so forth), so his focus on only warming-related benefits of, for example, carbon taxes, misses all the other benefits related to curbing carbon emissions (some mentioned above).

Perhaps the additional aspects of global warming have little importance; perhaps it doesn't change the overall picture. But an inclusive analysis shouldn't ignore so much.

So that is why I give this little book three stars. The analysis is great, but it is incomplete.
